Rhein-Neckar Löwen want to extend contract with head coach Martin Schwalb

The Rhein-Neckar Löwen want to extend the contract of their coach Martin Schwalb, which expires in summer 2021. The 57-year-old has been Baden’s head coach since February 2020 after replacing Sweden’s Kristian Andresson.

„We have always emphasized that Martin Schwalb is an absolute stroke of luck for the Rhein-Neckar Löwen. That is why we would be happy if he remained our head coach beyond the season,“ said the manager of the Bundesliga handball team, Jennifer Kettemann „Mannheim Morning“ (Wednesday). „But first of all it is necessary to create the conditions.“

Born in Stuttgart, he started his active career at TSG Steinheim and then came to Frisch Auf Göppingen via TSG Oßweil (1980-82). Later he also wore the jersey from TV Großwallstadt, TUSEM Essen and SG Wallau / Massenheim. In 1999 he also played the relegation games in the 2nd Bundesliga for HC 93 Bad Salzuflen.

The left-hander scored a total of 2272/945 goals in 428 Bundesliga games. The greatest successes are three wins each in the championship and the cup as well as two European Cup victories. The 1996 handball player won Olympic silver at the Los Angeles Games in 1984.

Schwalb entered the coaching business in 1998 at SG Wallau / Massenheim. After the economic end, he briefly coached HSG Wetzlar, but from October 2005 he was with HSV Hamburg, where he won the German Championship (2011), the EHF Champions League (2013), the European Cup Winners’ Cup (2007) and twice the DHB- Cup (2006, 2010). He was also named coach of the year for the second time in 2010, after having succeeded as coach of Wallau / Massenheim ten years earlier.
