Alfred Gislason: „We are all worried“

Just before his debut as a national coach, Alfred Gislason is seriously worried about his sport due to the crown pandemic. He also understands the concerns of the players, given the upcoming international tasks.

  • Of course, we are all worried. Many players are also in the European Cup and the Champions League. Of course, I hope that all the tests will be negative, that we can train, that Bosnians will also come, „said the 61-year-old Icelander.

This Monday, the German handball national team will meet in Dusseldorf. On Thursday, the DHB team plays against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the start of qualifying for the European Championship. The match in the ISS DOME will be played without spectators. He will play against Estonia in Tallinn on November 8. Gislason only has Tuesdays and Wednesdays for practice.

  • Of course I understand that the players are worried. A lot is happening, said Gislason, who is afraid of the reduction of international matches or even cancellations. I think the current reality is that it will be difficult to continue playing in the Champions League or the EHF Cup like that. At the national level, the game can be allowed to continue, then you have it – each country for itself – better under control. German clubs did it, very well with their concepts, they did it very well – with 2,000 or 3,000 spectators in the halls, praised the experienced coach of the Corona measure in the Bundesliga. But no handball club could survive with that, because even there, minus makes every game. It will be extremely difficult for the Bundesliga to play the entire second half of the season without spectators, Gislason said and concluded – I think politics should help.
