The selector of Poland, Patrick Rombel, talks about participating in the World Cup in Egypt and points out that it is incredible news and great joy and an opportunity for Poland to play with the best selections again.
- Incredible news and great joy for our team that we will play in the World Cup in Egypt in 2021! We have to compete regularly with the best teams to keep growing. The championship is the perfect opportunity for that, I am very happy! – says Patrick Rombel after Poland received a „wild card“ for the upcoming World Cup. The main argument in our favor was that we have the World Cup in 2023, so it is in everyone’s interest for handball to be popular enough in Poland for the halls to be full at all matches, not just when Poland is playing. If we are not present at big handball events earlier, it will not affect the popularity of handball in the country, so we are counting on a positive end. Still, I’m a little surprised that the decision was made so quickly. I didn’t expect that, although we knew we had arguments for qualifying for the championship.
Will the security of going to the World Cup change anything in the calendar of the Polish national team?
- Not. We worked for a long time as if we were going to this championship. There are no deadlines for the next, additional grouping, we follow the calendar and regulations that apply to us. From September, the clubs start with a large number of matches. We would like to meet more often, but we have to work with what we have.
What does a trip to the World Cup mean for the Polish national team?
- This is another opportunity to play with the best. In order to develop further, we need as much participation as possible. The World Cup is the perfect opportunity for that. That is why I am very glad that we will also participate in it, concludes Rombel
